This painting is a unique piece signed by Manuel Baumen, a Mexican artist who reinterprets popular culture icons through the pintura reversa en vidrio technique. The artist paints on the back side of a glass plate, working in mirror: facial details and mask features are laid down first, color fields and background last. Once turned over, the glass reveals the image with a depth and brilliance unique to this technique inherited from Mexican devotional retablos. The blue patinated wooden frame is handcrafted.

Blue Demon — The Rival Who Became El Santo’s Ally
n
n
Alejandro Muñoz Moreno, fifth of twelve children from a farming family in García, Nuevo León, first wore the blue mask in 1948. Initially a rudo teaming with Black Shadow, he turned tecnico after El Santo unmasked his partner in 1952. What followed was lucha libre’s most famous rivalry: Blue Demon defeated El Santo and took the NWA World Welterweight title, holding it for five years (1953-1958). The two rivals eventually starred in nine films together.

In 41 years of career, Blue Demon was never unmasked. He was buried wearing his mask at the Parque Memorial in Naucalpan.
